Unique Reclaimed Wood Ideas for your Home

January 24, 2016

Recently my brother asked me take a crack at designing a feature wall in their home.  The only requirement I had was to try to integrate reclaimed wood (aka barn board).  Their home is a new build, they just moved in last year.  And while it has a bit of a chic rustic feel to it, it is also quite contemporary.  With beautiful cream/beige kitchen cabinets, granite countertops and a simple slate coloured backsplash.

I have to qualify, that my brother still lives in Manitoba.  So coming up with a design is a tiny bit harder in that I don’t have access to suppliers to check out what is available for materials and mainly see the entire space together.  What I do have on my side are the actual plans (woo hoo!!) and the fact that my brother and my dad have done a lot of the work in the house, and plan to do this work as well.

I drew inspiration from one picture in particular, shown below

Rustic Living Room by Truckee Architects & Building Designers Kelly and Stone Architects – Tahoe
The design of this space is very rustic and the ceiling does make it a bit more country but with a modern vibe.  My brother and his wife’s feature wall is very long and could use some dimension to allow it to be more dynamic.  This design of the fireplace is eye-catching and more unique – a conversation starter – which I like.  It also allows for some creation of storage, either built in, or beside the fireplace.  However, I did find this to make the room pretty heavy, even with the lighter furniture.  So I was going to keep this as inspiration, however, wanted to think about how to integrate barn board here, in a much different way.

The above design showcases reclaimed wood on the ceiling, with amazing rustic beams.  It really got me researching unique ways to integrate reclaimed wood into a urban or contemporary space.  Using reclaimed wood is a great, sustainable option, if that’s a big focus for materials in your home, plus it can be applied in many different styles of homes.  As I’m working on the design for my brother and his wife, I thought I would share some of the cool ideas that I came across.

I personally love barn board.  I keep trying to find ways to integrate it into my home.  I have a few ideas and thanks to this post, even more.  Really, the only thing holding me back is the time to do it.  Perhaps once I finish school.  Do you love the look as well?  If you are like me and would like to find a quick and easy way to get the look?  I found a great product from West Elm called Stikwood!  This product is essentially a wood veneer that has had adhesive strips places on the back to make it super easy to install.  And it comes in 4 different colours.

It doesn’t come cheap though.  At $280 for 20 sq ft, it definitely is not a less expensive way to add reclaimed barn wood to your home.  West Elm also has mural wallpaper that imitates the look of reclaimed wood and other natural materials at a lesser cost.  Your local wall coverings specialist can likely help you also if this option appeals to you.
Hopefully this post has given you some ideas for your home.  As I mentioned, this material can be used in many different home styles, you just need to find the right application.  If you need help finding the right solution for you home – don’t hesitate to get in touch!  Click on “Contact” for the details.

The fire place with the picture above you have labeled as “Herringbone!!!” that’s not a herringbone pattern but rather a Chevron.

Hi Wayne! You are indeed correct! My mistake – especially considering I wrote a post on the difference. An oversight on my part 🤦‍♀️. Thanks for flagging it. 😊
